With a focus on making healthy cooking accessible, Harris draws from his experience creating practical recipes that don’t require endless time or obscure ingredients. In Proper Healthy, his collaboration with a registered dietician ensures the recipes aren’t just tasty but also nutritionally sound. Harris’s friendly tone and commitment to simplicity make him an inviting guide for anyone exploring plant-based cooking.

Audience

This book is for plant-based eaters and anyone curious about incorporating more vegan meals into their diet. It’s particularly great for those with specific health goals, as the recipes are designed to address energy, gut health, protein intake, and calorie balance. Beginners will love the straightforward approach, while seasoned cooks can enjoy the fresh ideas for health-focused meals.

Mission

The mission of Proper Healthy is clear: to make healthy eating simple, delicious, and accessible for everyone. By pairing vibrant plant-based dishes with practical health “boosts,” the book aims to help readers fuel their bodies and minds while enjoying every bite. Harris’s goal is to show that vegan cooking can be both indulgent and beneficial, removing the stigma of “missing out” on favorite flavors.

Standout and Unique Features

  • Health “boosts” highlighted for every recipe (Energy, Gut Health, Protein-Packed, and Shape-Up).
  • A mix of everyday favorites and creative dishes, from Tempeh Taco Bowls to Upside-Down Pistachio and Orange Semolina Cake.
  • Bright, modern photography that makes every dish look irresistible.

What I liked

I loved the health-boost structure, which makes it easy to choose recipes that align with specific wellness goals. The book’s mix of simple, familiar dishes and inventive new ideas offers something for everyone. The ingredient lists are accessible, and the photography adds an inspiring touch. I especially appreciated the discussions with a dietitian at the beginning, which provided helpful context for understanding how the recipes can support different health goals.

What I Didn't Like

This is more of a personal thing, but there are a lot of recipes with meat replacement and there's a lot of tempe as a replacement for meat. I am not a full-time vegan, but my mother-in-law is, so I am used to eating a variety of vegan foods. I would probably feel differently if I were a full-time vegan, but I really prefer vegan recipes that use vegetables and grains. There are certainly a good number of these, but I wish there more.
