Ever feel like you’re constantly running on a hamster wheel, even after the workday ends? I get it. That’s exactly why I ended up focusing myself on slow living, especially when it comes to creating an intentional evening routine. Let’s talk about how we can transform those precious evening hours into a sanctuary of calm.
You know that feeling when you’re scrolling through your phone until midnight, then wondering why you can’t sleep? Yeah, been there. But here’s the thing: when we intentionally slow down our evenings, something magical happens. Our stress melts away, sleep improves, and we actually get to enjoy those final hours of the day instead of just rushing through them.
Let me share some of my favorite ways to wind down and embrace the slow living philosophy. Don’t feel pressured to try everything at once – pick what resonates with you and build from there.
Set the Mood with Cozy Vibes
Think of this as creating your personal retreat. Dim those harsh overhead lights and turn on your candler warmer. It’s amazing how quickly your body responds to soft, warm lighting. Add some calming essential oils to a diffuser, and you’ve got yourself a spa-like atmosphere right at home.
The Great Digital Disconnect
I know, I know – this one’s tough. But trust me: setting a “screens-off” time is a game-changer. Mine is 10 PM. Instead of mindlessly scrolling, I’ve started to pick up my Kindle (I wish I could get off screen entirely but I love that thing too much!) or flip through the most recent edition of Homesteading Monthly.
Sip Something Soothing
There’s something almost ceremonial about preparing a warm drink in the evening. My go-to is Trader Joe’s Winter Warmer tea plain, but maybe you’re more of a golden milk person? The key is making it a mindful experience – really feeling the warmth of the mug in your hands, enjoying the aroma, and sipping slowly.
Get Those Thoughts on Paper
Take 5-10 minutes to jot down your thoughts. No rules, no pressure. Sometimes I just list three good things that happened that day, even if they’re as simple as “my coffee was perfect this morning” or “I kept my cool in a hard meeting today.” It’s surprisingly powerful for shifting your mindset and such a quick thing to add to an evening routine.
Elevate Your Bathing Ritual
Transform your regular shower or bath into a mini-retreat. Add some Epsom salts to your bath (amazing for sore muscles), or use a lovely scented body wash in the shower. The warm water naturally signals to your body that it’s time to wind down. Plus, it feels pretty luxurious, doesn’t it?
Future You Will Thank You
Spend a few minutes setting tomorrow up for success. Lay out your clothes, prep your lunch, or jot down your most important tasks. It’s not about cramming in more productivity – it’s about giving your mind permission to fully relax, knowing tomorrow is handled.
Get Creative (No Talent Required!)
Pick up something that engages your hands and calms your mind. Maybe it’s knitting (even if you’re making the world’s most imperfect scarf), doodling, or working on a jigsaw puzzle. The goal isn’t to create a masterpiece – it’s to lose yourself in the process.
Just Breathe
Meditation doesn’t have to mean sitting in silence for an hour. Start with just three deep breaths, or try a guided meditation app if you’re new to this. Even a one-minute breathing exercise can help shift your energy and calm your mind.
Make Sleep Sacred
Try to hit the hay around the same time each night. Create a little pre-sleep ritual for your evening routines – maybe reading a few pages of a book, listening to soft music, or using a cozy sleep mask. Your body will start recognizing these cues and naturally begin to wind down.
Your Turn to Slow Down
Remember, creating an evening routine isn’t about adding more to your plate – it’s about intentionally doing less. Start small. Maybe pick just one or two of these ideas and try them for a week. See how they feel, adjust them to fit your life, and gradually add more if you want to.
